The former Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremesinghe spoke to Palki Sharma, on the global leadership series on WION, about everything from the COVID-19 pandemic to the dire need of global leadership and on a lighter note about how he keeps himself busy with Hindi movies during the lockdown.
The Former Prime Minister says that at the moment Sri Lanka is successfully controlling the COVID-19 pandemic but need to follow the testing strategy of Germany and South Korea.
Wickremesinghe noted that the COVID-19 pandemic is more challenging than any world war. “In any war you knew who the enemy was. …This is more. No one thought the virus would spread so fast undermining all the economies. Globally we are all in a difficult situation but there is no global leadership to guide us. It’s a collective failure of the leaders and the institutions. Someone has to come forward during the crisis”.
“Bulk of Sri Lanka’s foreign loans, about 50% of its international debt are international sovereign bonds. Loans from China, India come up to about 25%. Sri Lanka has to pay a billion dollars in a few months’ time,” he said adding that the government is in discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
