Tamil People’s Council will not be a political party

Northern Province Chief Minister CV Wigneswaran said that the Tamil People’s Council which was formed for the benefit of the Tamil people will never be transformed into a political party while it would intervene as a forum for all political activities.

The Chief Minister made this remark in response to a question raised by journalists as to whether the Tamil People’s Council (TPC) will be registered as a party in future elections.

Chief Minister Wigneswaran formed the Tamil People’s Council in December 2015 to find solutions for the problems of the Tamil people in the country are facing.

The Chief Minister expressing his views said the TPC was formed to represent Tamil people and it does come to an election as a party. He said that activists of the constituent parties of Tamil National Alliance (TNA) are also in the Tamil People’s Council.

“However, although we will not contest elections as a political party, we have decided to participate in election activities,” Mr. Wigneswaran said.

Meanwhile EPRLF leader Suresh Premachandran, who had left the Tamil National Alliance, said there is possibility that his party, the TPC and the TNA will contest the upcoming Local Government Elections under a common symbol. (CP)
