Jaya Trashes US-led Resolution

Jayalalitha.jpg 2The Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Friday said the unanimous adoption of the US-led resolution on Reconciliation, Accountability and Human Rights in Sri Lanka in the United Nations Human Rights Council would be of no use to Tamils in Sri Lanka as it only favoured the Sri Lankan government. She was deeply disappointed and distressed.

In a statement issued here, Jayalalithaa expressed her anguish at the Centre’s apathy to the unanimous resolution adopted by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly seeking an international inquiry into the war crimes against Sri Lankan Tamils during the civil war.

“I had sought immediate action on the Assembly resolution adopted on September 16. However, the Centre did not take any constructive steps on this and it wounded the feelings of people in Tamil Nadu,” she said.

Jayalalithaa argued that the international collaborative probe mooted in the US-led UN resolution would not equal an international probe into the war crimes against Tamils in Sri Lanka.

On the other hand, the resolution adopted by the Tamil Nadu Assembly had echoed the expectations of Tamils across the globe and strengthened the resolutions adopted earlier by the Northern Provincial Council.

The resolution said India was duty-bound to prevent any resolution that would pave the way for Sri Lanka to conduct an inquiry into war crimes on its own. The resolution also said that if the US backed Sri Lanka, India should use its diplomatic channels to change the US stand.

The Centre did nothing to give shape to this resolution, she said. (New Indian Express)
