Carve out three or five States
Leader of the Opposition in Parliament R. Sampanthan on Thursday mooted the idea of forming three or five regions in Sri Lanka and providing them maximum powers.
“Through this proposal, interests of people are best served,” he said.
He expressed his reservations over the move to increase the number of Ministers and referred to the presence of many young MPs, who, he said, could be accommodated through his proposal.
Pointing out that the country’s biggest neighbour, India, remained united with 29 States, he said enough powers had been given to the States, by which aspirations of people were being respected and realised. (The Hindu)
