UN experts will review Lanka next week

UN (OHCHR)The UN Human Rights Committee, which monitors implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), will review Sri Lanka next week, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said in a statement today.

The UN Human Rights Committee is meeting in Geneva from 7 to 31 October and the Committee will review Sri Lanka on October 7 and 8, Burundi on October 8 and 9, Haiti on October 9 and 10, Malta on October 13 and 14, Montenegro October 14 and 15 and Israel on October 20th.

Sri Lanka is among the 168 States Parties to the ICCPR, which is one of the main international human rights treaties. They are required to submit regular reports to the Committee of 18 international independent experts. The Committee will also hear from NGOs and national human rights institutions.

The review sessions take place from 10:00 to 13:00 and 15:00 to 18:00 at Palais Wilson, Geneva. A news conference in relation to the review is scheduled for Thursday 30 October at the Palais des Nations, Geneva. (Colombo Gazette)
