Road in Matara named Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathan Mawatha
Opening of Sir Ponnampalam Ramanathan Mawatha in the southern area is an example for mutual understanding among races and friendliness and its development, said EPDP Secretary General and Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise development Minister Douglas Devananda.
The Minister stated this in his address participating as the Chief Gusset at the opening ceremony of Sir Ponnampalam Mawatha at Matara Town. The Kotugoda Mawatha of Matara Town was renamed as Sir Ponnampalam Mawatha for the above said reason.
He said further, Sir Ponnampalam Ramathan strived to release the Sinhala people who were imprisoned by the English people. He went to England for this purpose and on his arrival back to Sri-Lanka the Sinhala people received him with ovation, they praised him as their leader and to express their elation they took him in a procession.
We are very glad and it is our bounden duty to thank profusely Minister Dullas Alagapperuma, Matara Municipal Councilors and the public of this area for honouring a note worthy leader of such a caliber. With this we can iron out differences and build up friendly bridges among our fraternal communities. This effort of Minister Dullas Alagapperuma is an example for all communities of this country Minister Devananda added.
Addressing this function Youth Affairs and Skill Development Minister Dullas Alagapperuma said, we the fraternal communities of this country do not known the languages of each other and this is unfortunate.
The Northern Youths who were engaged in violence during the past are being welcomed by the people of South when they arrive here. Likewise whenever we go to North the people there welcome us warmly. This situation must continue forever, he said further.
