The swearing in ceremony of nine Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Northern Provincial Council members which was scheduled to take place in Mullivaikal tomorrow has been postponed following the intervention of Mannar Bishop Rayappu Joseph.
The nine members had boycotted the official swearing in ceremony in Jaffna on Friday in front of Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran.
TNA MP Sivashakthi Anand said the Bishop was of the view that the differences of opinion which has arisen among some members in the TNA should and can be resolved.
The Bishop has said that in order to show public confidence in the TNA the ceremony organised by the TNA dissidents should be put off and held when the new Council meets or a day before it meets.
The Mannar Bishop has said that he would hold a meeting with all the constituent parties of the TNA about its future political goals.
Keeping all this in mind, MP Sivashakthi Anand has said that the TNA members who were to take oaths tomorrow had agreed to put the ceremony on hold.
Speaking at a joint press briefing in Jaffna yesterday the leaders of the EPRLF and PLOTE as well as TELO member M.K Shivajilingam and Sivashakthi Anand had said their party members will take oaths at Mullivaikal tomorrow.
Shivajilingam had said that the nine Council members decided to take oaths in Mullivaikal as it was where hundreds of civilians were believed to have been killed during the final stages of the war.
Shivajilingam said his party position was that the official ceremony in Jaffna had been organized without obtaining full consent of all the constituent members of the TNA.
There was also a dispute over the four Ministers appointed to the Council. (Colombo Gazette)
