Ravana Balaaya stage protests against Navi Pillay’s visit

   About 100 Sri Lankan demonstrators led by Buddhist monks have protested outside the UN office in Colombo against the visit of Navi Pillay, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The general secretary for the Patriotic National Movement, Dr Vasantha Bandara, who also supported the protestors, told a local radio station that they wanted the government to prevent any NGO’s from meeting or holding discussions with Pillay.

The activists accused the international community of drumming up false allegations of war crimes in 2009 during the final months of a separatist conflict.

They called on Pillay to leave the country and stop criticising Colombo’s human rights record.

“She should visit countries like Iraq and Afghanistan which have become slaughter-houses,” said Ittekande Saddatissa, a Buddhist monk.

The activists vowed to stage more protests if UN rights official Navi Pillay criticised Sri Lanka during her week-long mission, which they say would damage the country emerging from decades of ethnic war.

The group handed over a signed petition to an UN official, pledging that further organised protests would occur should Pillay ‘fabricate lies’ about the country.

Meanwhile the UN Human Rights Commissioner Navaneetham Pillay visited Jaffna on Monday evening. The Commissioner arrived in the Jaffna peninsula at 7.00 pm in a special flight.

She visited the newly constructed hospital for which the  Japanese government granted financial support.

එක්සත් ජාතීන්ගේ මානව හිමිකම් මහ කොමසාරිස් නවනීදන් පිල්ලේ මහත්මියගේ ශ්‍රී ලංකා සංචාරයට එරෙහිව රාවණා බලය සංවිධානය කොළඹ බෞද්ධාලෝක මාවතේ පිහිටි එක්සත් ජාතීන්ගේ කාර්යාලය ඉදිරිපිටට පා ගමනින් පැමිණියහ. එක්සත් ජාතීන්ගේ කාර්යාලය දක්වා පැමිණි භික්ෂූන් වහන්සේලා පෙරටුකරගත් රාවණා බලය සාමාජිකයන්ට එම කාර්යාලය ඉදිරිපිටට යාමට ඉඩනොදී පොලිසිය අවහිර කරන ලදී. අනතුරුව කොස්තාපල් වරුන් හා පොලිස් කාන්තා නිලධාරින් එක්ව භික්ෂූන් වහන්සේලාව තල්ලුකරමින් එම ස්ථානයෙන් ඉවත් කිරීමට උත්සාහ කිරීමත් සමග එහිදී නොසන්සුන් තාවයක් ඇති විය. මෙහිදී එක්සත් ජාතීන්ගේ නියෝජිතයින් සමඟ සාකච්ජා කිරීම සදහා රාවණා බලයේ නියෝජිතයින් 05 දෙනෙකුට අවස්ථාව ලබා දුන්නද එය ප්‍රතික්ෂේප කරමින් උද්ඝෝෂකයින් විසිර යන ලදී.

මේ අතර දිවයිනට පැමිණ සිටින එක්සත් ජාතීන්ගේ සංවිධානයේ මානව හිමිකම් කටයුතු පිළිබද මහකොමසාරිස් නවනීදන් පිල්ලෙයි මහත්මිය අගවිනිසුරු මොහාන් පිරිස්, නීතිපති පාලිත ප්‍රනාන්දු හා අධිකරණ අමාත්‍ය රවුෆ් හකීම් මහතා සමඟ ද අද පෙරවරුවේ සාකච්ජාවක නිරතව තිබේ. මේ අතර පිල්ලෙයි මහත්මිය හෙට සහ අනිද්දා යන දින වල දී උතුරු ප්‍රදේශවල සංචාරය කිරීමට නියමිතය.
