SL HR violations in US Ambassador to UN agenda

  US Ambassador to United Nations Samantha Power has decided to include issues on Sri Lanka human rights violations in her agenda, reports said.Samantha Power is been known to be a close acquaintance of US President Obama. Ms. Power, an Irish-born academic worked on human-rights issues on the National Security Council during Mr. Obama’s first term.

Ms. Power, who covered the wars of the former Yugoslavia as a journalist. In her Pulitzer Prize-winning book,  ” A Problem From Hell” she recorded the history of genocide in the 20th century, offering a critique of the failure of the United States and other countries to stop it.

The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee chief, Robert Menendez on July 17th has explained to the US Senate regarding the appointment of Samantha Power and her future plans.She has won the support of the US Senate her appointment will be confirmed at the vote held today (23).

U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, delivered this opening statement, at the nomination hearing for Samantha Power to serve as Ambassador to the United Nations.

He said your belief that we should use the lessons of what clearly was an atrocity of historic proportions to prevent future crimes against humanity is a view consistent with my own and which is supported by your role on the President’s Atrocities Prevention Board.

I agree that we must acknowledge and study the past, understand how and why atrocities happen, to put-into-practice and giving meaning to the phrase, “never again.”

If confirmed your focus at the United Nations will – no doubt – be on the crisis du jour — the Middle East, Syria, Iran, North Korea, Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, increasingly on North Africa, and the nature of nations that emerge from the Arab Spring but I would encourage you to also keep your focus and task your staff to watch what is happening off the front page as well as on it.

What may be happening on freedom of expression in Latin America; fighting HIV/AIDS, malaria and polio in Africa; on the status of talks to resolve the 66 yearlong question of Cyprus; on women’s rights in Pakistan; labor rights in Bangladesh, and human rights in Sri Lanka.

The next Human Rights Council of UN is scheduled to be held on March next year.

එක්සත් ජාතින්ගේ සංවිධානයේ මීළඟ මානව හිමිකම් සමුළුව ලබන වසරේ මාර්තු මාසයේදී පැවැත්වීමට නියමිතව ඇති අතර, එක්සත් ජාතීන්ගේ සංවිධානය සඳහා වන නව ඇමරිකානු තානාපතිවරිය වන සමන්තා පවර් විසින් ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ මානව හිමිකම් ගැටළුව සම්බන්ධයෙන් දැඩි ක්‍රියාමාර්ගයක් ගැනීමට ඉඩ ඇතැයි රාජ්‍යතන්ත්‍රීක ආරංචිමාර්ග සඳහන් කරයි.
