Demonstrations cut short Karu Jayasuriya’s visit to Tamil Nadu

     The visit of  United National Party MP Karu Jayasuriya and his wife to Nagapattinam was cut short following protests by political parties on Thursday morning. According to Police they checked into a hotel on Wednesday night in Thirukkadaiyur in Nagapattinam district to perform some rituals at the Sri  Abirami Amirkadeswarar temple.

The police on receiving information that cadres of Naam Tamilar Katchi, MDMK, DMK and VCK planned to protest his visit to Tamil Nadu, ensured that Jayasurya and his wife left the hotel.

The protesters besieged the hotel shouted slogans against the MP unaware they had already left and a large posse of police personnel were deployed in front of the hotel. As the situation worsened, the MP returned to Trichy to fly back to Sri Lanka,but in Trichy too, another set of protesters launched an attack and  pelted stones on his car damaging the windscreen, whilst eggs were thrown on the hotel.

A group of around 50 Tamil refugees from Sri Lankan  also thronged the hotel and demanded the exit of the MP from the country. Police arrested 11 persons near the hotel whist five others were arrested for damaging the vehicle.

Though Mr Jayasuriya was to leave on Friday, taking into consideration the security aspect, they were sent to Chennai from where they left for Sri Lanka.

A police spokesman said “We are going to send strong recommendations to the government to stop allowing Sri Lankan VIPs to visit Tamil Nadu because of such protests by the Tamil outfits and political parties.”

On September 4, 2012, around 170 Sri Lankan pilgrims who visited Poondi and Velankanni  on a pilgrimage too were forced to leave Trichy following protest and attacks on their vehicles by Tamil groups

ඉන්දියාවේ පෞද්ගලික සංචාරයක යෙදී සිටින එජාප මන්ත්‍රී කරු ජයසුරිය මහතා නවාතැන් ගෙන සිට තමිල් නාඩුවේ, නාගපට්ටම් හි හෝටලය විරෝධතා කරුවන් පිරිසක් විසින් අද (21) දහවල් වටලා තිබේ. ජයසුරිය මහතා හා ඔහුගේ බිරිඳ පසුගිය අඟහරුවාදා ඉන්දියාවට ගොස් තිබිණ.
ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ දේශපාලනඥයකු එහි පැමිණ සිටින බවට වූ ආරංචියට අනුව, තමන් නැවතී සිටි හෝටලය අභියසට ද විරෝධතා කරුවන් පැමිණි බවට තමන්ට තොරතුරු ලැබුණු බවත්, මෙම විරෝධතාකරුවන් එම හෝටලය වෙත පැමිණෙන අවස්ථාව වන විට ආගමික කටයුත්තක් සදහා තමන් හෝටලයෙන් පිටත්ව ගොස් සිටි බවත් ජයසුරිය මහතා ගෙන් කල විමසීමකදී සඳහන් කළේය. කෙසේ වෙතත් තමන් සැලසුම් කළ පරිද්දෙන් කටයුතු සියල්ල සාර්ථකව නිම කර ගත් බවත්, තමන් කලින් තීන්දු කල පරිදි හෙට (22 ) පෙරලා කොළඹට පැමිණෙන බවත් කරු ජයසුරිය මහතා වැඩිදුරටත් ප්‍රකාශ කළේය
