Chief Minister of the North C.V.Wigneswaran refused to hoist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) flag at a meeting, organized by a group of pro-LTTE organizations, in London yesterday.
Wigneswaran was in London to sign a memorandum of understanding linking Britain’s Royal Borough of Kingston City with Jaffna. The signing of that memorandum took place last Tuesday (18).
Meanwhile, a series of meetings were organized, by the Tamil expatriates in London, to welcome Chief Minister Wigneswaran. A key meeting was held in Rayners Lane yesterday where the organizers had even planned to hoist the LTTE flag, sources said.
However, Wigneswaran had told the Rayners Lane meeting organizers he would not hoist the LTTE flag and would not address the meeting if any arrangement was being made to hoist the flag. Following his refusal, the organizers dropped their plan to hoist the flag.
Meanwhile, Wigneswaran met the members of the Tamil Chamber of Commerce in London at a separate meeting a few days ago and had extensive discussion on the possibilities of launching business ventures in the Northern Province, sources said.
Nearly 100 British entrepreneurs of Lankan Tamil origin participated in the interactive programme with the Chief Minister. (CT)
