The National Fishworkers’ Forum (NFF) has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister for External Affairs, Sushma Swaraj, to form a high-level committee comprising fishermen representatives, officials of the External Affairs Ministry, Navy and Coast Guard ahead of the fourth round of talks with Sri Lanka, to find an amicable solution to fishing-related issues.
In letters to the Prime Minister and External Affairs Minister, NFF chairperson M Ilango welcomed the Union government’s efforts to organise the 4th round of bilateral talks between the fishermen representatives of India and Sri Lanka so as to enable peaceful sharing of fishing waters between the two nations.
He pointed out that the Sri Lankan government had constituted a committee to discuss the issue among themselves and come for the talks with a united stand.
The NFF leader demanded that similar consultation meetings among stake-holders in the country be organised by constituting a high-level committee to discuss and form unanimous suggestions in consonance with the policies, for finding an amicable solution.(The New Indian Express)
