In what will be his first visit to India after being re-elected as Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe will meet PM Narendra Modi on September 14. Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena is likely to visit India too next month.
Former Lankan president Chandrika Kumaratunga confirmed to journalists Saturday that Wickremesinghe will start a three-day visit to India on September 14. Kumaratunga is in India to participate in a conference on Buddhism organized by the Vivekananda International Foundation in Bodh Gaya.
Kumaratunga also warned that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had still not given up hope of returning to power as he wanted to suppress corruption cases against him. She said many innocents would have been killed if he had won in the recently concluded elections. Rajapaksa had unsuccessfully contested these elections after he lost to Sirisena in the presidential polls in January. Kumaratunga has in the past accused him of running a family centric dictatorship.(TOI)
