MDMK chief Vaiko on Monday quit the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance

vaikoMDMK chief Vaiko on Monday quit the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance after he hit out at two BJP leaders for criticising him over his remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Being in NDA is untenable because of PM Modi’s policies,” the 70-year-old leader said in a statement. “The Modi government has not followed the steps of (former PM Atal Bihari) Vajpayee. There have been differences, so the MDMK

has decided not to continue in the BJP-led National Democratic Allaince. Henceforth MDMK quits NDA,” the statement added.

Vaiko, a known supporter of the LTTE, had criticised Modi for greeting Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa at the recently-concluded SAARC summit in Nepal. He had also blamed the Centre for the death sentence awarded to five Tamil Nadu fishermen in Sri Lanka, who were later released after PM Modi’s intervention.

BJP leader H Raja had allegedly threatened Vaiko to stop criticizing PM Modi failing which, he said, BJP workers knew how to control him. Another party leader Subramanian Swamy had openly stated that MDMK should be thrown out of the NDA alliance.

The MDMK had joined the NDA ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. While the BJP managed to win one seat, Kanyakumari, Vaiko’s party drew a blank in the May elections. (India Today)
