Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Jaffna District Parliamentarian E. Saravanapavan yesterday (December 6) strongly refuted reports that he would be supporting President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the upcoming presidential election.
Speaking to The Nation, Saravanapavan, who is also the Managing Director of the Jaffna-based Uthayan Tamil newspaper, described reports of him supporting President Rajapaksa as ‘completely baseless’ and an attempt to create a ‘wrong picture’ in the minds of the people.
However, Saravanapavan lightheartedly quipped he was now getting ‘publicity’ among Sinhala media regarding reports of his crossover. The TNA, Saravanapavan reiterated, has still not taken a decision on supporting a candidate at the presidential election. “There is no need to rush. The candidates have not even presented their manifestos yet,” he pointed out.
Stating his personal view, the MP said before the candidates think about obtaining even one Tamil vote, they needed to clearly state in their respective manifestos what they planned to do for the Tamil people.
“They took us (Tamils) in forcefully to this concept of one Sri Lanka. They promised us equal rights as citizens. This is not the case still,” he added. (The Nation)
