A protest was staged in Puthukkudiyiruppu on 22 September 2014, against acquisition of land belonging to the Tamil community by the military.The protest commenced at 10.00 am from the Puthukkudiyiruppu market and the protesters marched up to the Pradeshiya Sabaha. Protesters demanded that the military vacate their lands and return their houses, on the status of disappeared relatives. The demonstrators shouted slogans and held placards reading, “Army get out”, “We want our land”, “We want our house” and “Stop Sinhala settlements.”[We] do not want development or compensation, give us an answer for our missing first!”.
Tamil National Alliance parliamentarian Vinogaradhalingam, Sivashakthi Anandan, provincial councilors and Tamil civilians took part in this protest.The protesters handed over petition to the Pradeshiya Sabaha. Meanwhile the Northern Chief Minister C.V. Vigneswaran requested the people to file petitions in court seeking justice to release their lands from military control.
