TNA General Secretary and the Illankai Tamil Arasu Katchchi (ITAK) Leader, Mavai S. Senathirajah, has requested TNA Northern Provincial Councillors to act in a responsible manner when introducing resolutions. Senathirajah said that certain Northern Provincial Council (NPC) members behave in a manner, which could bring discredit to the Council.
“Already we have been having a tug-of-war with the Central Government over the powers to be devolved to the NPC. The government is making every effort to weaken the NPC. Therefore, we should not leave room for the government to undermine the NPC by behaving in a highly irresponsible manner,” Senathirajah said.
He was referring to a recent resolution brought by NPC member and TNA politico, M. K. Sivajilingam, over several issues including the probe into alleged war crimes, which the former referred to as ‘going too fast.’
“TNA MPs are making every effort to succeed in holding the international probe into alleged war crimes in the country. We have already met international figures on this particular issue and we remain focused on the issue. The NPC should not act in a manner where the efforts taken by the TNA hierarchy in dealing with key issues such as the International probe into alleged war crimes are devalued,” Senathirajah said.
He also said the NPC should focus more on humanitarian and regional issues. “The TNA hierarchy would concentrate on international correspondence and the main national issues faced by the people in the North and East,” he said.
