The Jaffna Security Forces Commander Major General Udaya Perera warned student leaders and members of Jaffna University’s faculty that anyone involved in public commemoration of those who died in 2009 will court arrest. Jaffna Security Forces Commander Major General Udaya Perera had met the Jaffna university administration and student union representatives at the Thalsevana resort in Jaffna on 07 May 2014.
He had said that Mullivaikal remembrance events cannot take place in an organised manner. He added that any mourning should only take place within private homes.General Perera told the students that said that holding such events in the university could stir emotions and tensions and there is also a fear that some may attempt to glorify LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran at such an event and the army cannot allow that.
The meeting with General Perera, was held in Kankesanthurai, a day after a notice informing students that the Jaffna University would be shut around the time of May 16 to May 20 .
The university has in the past often become the centre of point of clashes between Tamil students and the security forces, over attempts to prevent public displays of mourning.
