The United States Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Nisha Desai Biswal arrived yesterday morning.. During her three-day visit, Biswal will meet with Sri Lankan officials to discuss a range of bilateral issues, including post-conflict reconciliation, justice and accountability issues. Biswal is expected to meet the Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem and Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa.
At a meeting with the Minister of External Affairs, Prof. G.L. Peiris, Biswal said that there is “growing frustration” in the international community due to the fear that Sri Lanka will lose the golden opportunity provided by the end of the conflict to move forward and that the US does not have a set agenda against Sri Lanka. Biswal is also scheduled to travel to Jaffna, where she will meet with Governor and the Chief Minister of the Northern Province and other council officials and civil society leaders. The Assistant Secretary will leave Sri Lanka on February 2.
