The Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) says most politicians in Sri Lanka including those in the Government listen to the Cardinal more than they listen to the Chief Prelates. Bodu Bala Sena general secretary Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara said that politicians in Sri Lanka pretend to respect the teachings and advice of the leading Buddhist monks in the country.
Gnanasara said that in Sri Lanka there are 33 monks of higher ranks but the Cardinal is given more prominence than all 33 monks. The Bodu Bala Sena general secretary did not mention the name of any Cardinal but he seemed to be referring to Sri Lanka’s only serving Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith.
Gnanasara said that the Bodu Bala Sena has not lost respect for the Chief Prelates and feels every effort must be taken to protect them and their teachings. At the same time, he said those who attempt to disrespect the robe should be dealt with. (Colombo Gazette)
