Closure of power plants cost millions of rupees losses to the CEB

Electricity lines    A people’s movement in Sri Lanka says that the closure of power plants costs losses amounting to millions of rupees to the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) on a daily basis.

The National Electricity Consumers’ Movement (NECM) has stated that the closure of the Bowatenna hydropower plant and the Norochcholai coal power plant at the same time has cost a daily loss of Rs. 89 million to the CEB.

Spokesperson of the Movement Bandula Chandrasekera pointed out that while the Norochcholai coal power plant has been closed for the last three weeks, the CEB has decided to carry out maintenance work on the Bowatenna hydropower plant as well.

He said that the CEB should have been more prudent and taken steps to shut down the Bowatenna plant after the Norochcholai plant was back in operation.

Meanwhile, one of the two turbines of the Kukule Gange Power Plant has also been shut down for several months due to technical problems.

According to Chandrasekera, all these have added to the financial woes of the CEB. He has added that the bad decisions of the CEB have now resulted in the Board incurring daily losses amounting to Rs. 89 million.
