“Sri Lanka is one of the Peaceful, Stable and Democratically Secured countries in the World”- Secretary Defence

Gota     Secretary Defence and Urban Development Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa stated that, now Sri Lanka is one of the peaceful, stable and democratically Secured countries in the World.

Mr. Rajapaksa made the statement while delivering the key note address as the Guest of honour at the inauguration ceremony of the 3rd successive Defence Seminar at the Galadari Hotel in Colombo on 03rd September.

‘Defence Seminar – 2013’, organized by the Sri Lanka Army commenced today and will be continued till 5th September 2013.The annual international gathering brings together senior military personnel, administrators, bureaucrats and intellectuals to share experiences and discuss matters under the theme of ‘Post Conflict Sri Lanka: Challenges and Regional Stability’.

Speaking further at the event Secretary Defence emphasized the achievements in de-mining, resettlement, reconstruction and reintegration since the dawn of peace in the country. He also described the livelihood assistances given to the resettled people in order to uplift their living standards.

Further elaborating on the areas existing with security restrictions Secretary Defence said that the Palaly cantonment is the only area imposed with some security restrictions at present, but that is even within the cantonment and civilians have given free access to both Airport and Kankasanthurai harbour.

He also reiterated that the Government has made every effort to give back the normal life for the citizens in North and East. ‘The duty and the responsibility of law and order enforcement has been entrusted to the Sri Lanka Police while establishing more and more police stations in the North and East with the recruitment of more Tamil speaking Police personnel to serve in these areas’, Secretary Defence stated.

Secretary Defence also gave a comprehensive briefing regarding the civilian casualties according to an enumeration taken by the Department of Census and Statistics in 2011.

Highlighting the responsibility of the media Secretary Defence said that some parties have been tarnished the country’s image by giving false statements to the local and international communities. He also said that now the countrymen have to unify under one flag irrespective of the religion, cast and place of birth and never let the extremism to rise up in various means which will destroy the hard earned peace.
