Many sailors on board the submarine reportedly jumped off to safety. “However, there is likelihood of some personnel being trapped inside. The details are being ascertained,” an official defence ministry statement issued at 3.15 a.m. said.
The details of other casualty figures were not immediately available though some injured sailors have been rushed to naval hospital INHS Ashvini in Colaba.
The cause of the explosion and blaze, as well as the extent of damage to the submarine and naval properties, is still not known.
The INS Sindhurakshak is said to be one of the 10 Kilo-class submarines bought from Russia between 1986 and 2000. It is equipped with Russian Club-S cruise missile system. The vessel returned from Russia last year after undergoing an upgrade and sea trials began last October, reports said.
In February 2010, a sailor on board the submarine was killed by a fire that broke out in the battery compartment of the submarine while it was docked at the Vishakhapatnam naval base – it was later that year that it was sent to Russia for the refit.
India has been expanding its armed forces rapidly to upgrade its mostly Soviet-era weaponry and react to perceived threats from regional rival China.
This explosion comes just days after India’s navy launched its first home-built aircraft carrier, hailed by officials as a “crowning glory”.
