Kalmunai Municipal Council (MC) passed a resolution last weekby a majority vote that no amendments should be made to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. Mayor, Dr. Zhiraz Meera Mohideen of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), moved the motion.
Under the Indo-Sri Lanka Accord, the 13th Amendment was enacted to solve the problems of minority communities by introducing the Provincial Council System. Diluting or repealing the 13th Amendment would be tantamount to damaging the goodwill of the minority communities and the concept of devolution of power at the grassroots level. Hence, the government should not dilute or repeal the 13th Amendment at any cost, the resolution stated.
Councillor M.A.C. Riyaz, representing the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) voted against the motion, while another SLFP Councillor, Z.A.H. Rahman abstained.
