Trade unions say strike a success; Govt says otherwise

strike 1     A large number of opposition trade unions staged a token strike demanding that the government to revoke the controversial electricity tariff increase. The Coordinating Committee for Trade Union Alliance stated that over 900 trade unions and 15 political parties joined in the much-hyped strike action.

The Government Information Department quoting government statistics reported that attendance to duties by employees at public sector and public enterprises exceed 93.5%, which is 3.5% more than the daily attendance.

A number of  private institutions have been completely closed down due to  yesterdays (21st) token strike called by the Coordinating Committee for Trade Union Alliance against the electricity tariff hike.

Several factories in the Free Trade Zone too have been closed down  as private sector employees who have been acutely burdened by the tariff hike have participated wholeheartedly in the token strike, the President of Inter Company Employees Union Wasantha Samarasinghe said

At the 1980 strike this much of private companies did not closed but today’s response was tremendous. Therefore, their agitation will not end from today hope to move forward with the support of everybody including all professionals’ journalists and many more, he said

Some of the institutions that had been completely closed are Munchee, Singer, Royal Ceramics, Lanka Tiles, Meepe Wall Tiles, CIC, Hayleys, Thomas Dilaru, Paint & General, Coca-cola, Little Lion, Elephant House, Dip Products, Neopreks, Acqa Packaging.
