arrest        A group of persons including two leaders of the Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF) have been arrested by Mannar Police  over a commemoration ceremony of  Tamil civilians killed in May 2009..

The General Secretary of the TNPF, S. Gajendran and National Organizer, S. Manivannan are said to be among the group of around 15 party members arrested.

They were arrested regarding a ceremony organized  to commemorate the deaths of Tamil civilians killed during May 2009 in Sri Lanka, TNPF leader and former MP Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam said.

Meanwhile  Sri Lanka’s main opposition Tamil party staged a commemoration of their war dead as the government celebrated the fourth anniversary of defeating Tamil Tiger rebels.

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) said it staged the remembrance in the northern town of Vavuniya for those who died in the final battle.

“We had a meeting to commemorate all those who died in the conflict,” TNA lawmaker Suresh Premachandran said.
