Fundamental rights petition filed against electricity tariff hike

electricitymeter   The Lawyers for Human Rights and Development (LHRD) of Sri Lanka filed a fundamental rights petition in the Supreme Court today for an order to suspend the new electrical tariff structure.

The petitioners, senior counsel Kalyananda Thiranagama and S. Dayangani cite that the new tariff structure pressures the low income earners and the small scale industrialists while granting relief to the wealthy and the mass scale industrialists.

Thiranagama said that he had gone to the Supreme Court twice before in 2006 and 2007 over the electricity rates and the Supreme Court has ordered the Public Utility Commission to prepare a tariff structure which is fair and affordable. He said that instead of charging an equal levy for all the electricity units consumed, the Supreme Court directed the authorities to grant the relief to all the consumers.
