A commemoration ceremony is to be held in Vavuniya on Saturday to remember the hundreds of Tamil civilians killed during the final stages of the war. The event is to mainly focus on those believed to have been killed in Mullivaikal.
Tamil National Alliance members, other Tamil politicians, civilians and family members of those killed in the battle are expected to take part in the event, reports said.
A UN panel had found that civilians may have been killed in the final months of the civil war, most as a result of shelling by the military.
The panel had called on the UN Chief to conduct an independent international investigation into the alleged violations of international humanitarian and human rights law committed by both sides.
