The government is manipulating the (PTA) to victimize its political opponents. Tamil National Alliance parliamentarian, M.A. Sumanthiran, said yesterday, claiming Mano Ganesan, Dr. Vickramabahu Karunaratne, Siritunga Jayasuriya and he have been threatened with death. Sumanthiran was addressing the weekly media meeting at the Azath Salley Foundation at Barnes Place, Colombo 7.
Sumanthiran said the PTA is a draconian piece of law, and its provisions are worse than even the detested Sharia Law prevalent in the Arab world. He added, the present government is making use of the Act to victimize who they perceive as their political opponents. Even the anticipatory bail provision as available under the ordinary course of justice that a person can take recourse to, to avoid being taken into custody, has been denied to the citizen in certain situations.
The government is moving towards a dictatorship. The regime has deprived the people of the North of their legitimate lands and properties. Though the government has declared lately it would hold the Northern Provincial Council (NPC) elections as per the 13th Amendment, it has not to date stated whether it would be held.
The NPC elections cannot be won by the government. No matter under what auspicious hour or moment the NPC elections are held he said, predicting the government is bound to meet its waterloo.
Leader of the Democratic People’s Front (DPF), Mano Ganesan, said the government is moving towards establishing a dictatorship in Sri Lanka. In its march towards despotism, which started with the arrest of ex-Army Commander, the General Sarath Fonseka, and ousting of the Chief Justice, Dr. Shiranee Bandaranayake, it has arrested its third politically perceived opponent, Azath Salley, who stands in their way towards dictatorship,” he said.
