US ‘extremely concerned’ on Sri Lanka media freedom

us state dept large   The United States said on Monday (15) it was “extremely concerned” about media freedom in Sri Lanka after gunmen attacked and torched the office of an opposition newspaper of the Tamil minority.

States Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell replying to a question regarding the latest attack against the island’s media at the state departments daily press briefing said that the United States condemns the reported attack against the Uthayan newspaper in Sri Lanka.

He said that this incident is the latest in a series of attacks against this outlet and media organizations in general and the United States remains extremely concerned about threats to freedom of expression in Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan authorities have been urged to protect freedom of expression, and to conduct a credible investigation, and to hold perpetrators accountable Mr Ventrell said.

Support for media freedom was one of the many recommendations of the LLRC report and a component of the recent UNHCR resolution in Geneva.
