The event was held under the patronage of the Commander of the Volunteer Forces of the Sri Lanka Army Major General Crishantha De Silva.
Sri Lankan Malay community has a long binding history with the army which goes back to colonial times. Their loyal, discipline and bravery had earned them a special place within the ranks and also the rulers. During the British period a full Malay battalion was formed which eventually became the Malay regiment of Sri Lanka, received the Queen’s colours in 1802. Later the name was changed as the Ceylon Rifle Regiment.
A Memorial Plaque was unveiled by the chief guest in honour of the war heroes of army, navy, air force and police.
Senior security forces officers and other ranks of the three forces and police, family members of the war heroes, Sri Lanka Malay Association and Colombo Malay Cricket Club officials and a number of distinguished dignitaries were present at the occasion.
