Chandimal had other commitments

chandimal       Many believed Dinesh Chandimal had turned down an offer to play at the Indian Premier League (IPL) as a result of the anti Sri Lanka protests in Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka Cricket says the real reason was that he had prior commitments.

A statement by Sri Lanka Cricket said that Sri Lanka’s T20 Captain Dinesh Chandimal had turned down an offer to Play in the Indian Premier League due to personal reasons.

The statement said that Chandimal was offered to play in the IPL a few days back as a replacement for another International player.

However he had decided not to accept the offer as he had made prior arrangements and is working on his batting technique with the batting coach before he embarks on the ICC Champions Trophy in England.

“He is also concentrating on his studies which he began prior to this offer from IPL and he intends to conclude his study course during this period,” the Cricket board said.

Several nationalist groups and some politicians had been calling on the Sri Lankan cricketers to boycott the IPL in protest over the ban imposed on Sri Lankan cricketers in Tamil Nadu.

Sri Lankan cricketers picked to play in the IPL have decided to go ahead and play in matches outside Tamil Nadu following security assurances given by the organizers.

Pune Warriors reportedly approached him after their leading player Michael Clarke picked up a back injury during the recent India-Australia series.

Another franchise struggling to cope with player injuries – Delhi Daredevils – also wanted to rope him in as a last-minute replacement for Kevin Pietersen.
