In an operation conducted at midnight, the Tamil Nadu police swooped on the eight Loyola College students who were on a hunger-strike in support of Eelam and have forcibly removed them from the venue of their protest at, Chennai. The students, who had begun their fast on Friday, have been taken to the General Hospital. Also, around 200 supporters of the students were detained in a community hall near the protest venue. While this move is seen as a move to curb rising sentiments among Tamil Nadu students against Sri Lanka
There were about 120 students at the venue, where eight Loyola College students had been fasting since the last three days in support of their 9-point charter of demands that includes demand for an international inquiry into the war crimes of Sri Lanka and a UN referendum on Eelam.
After removing the fasting students, the rest were put into police vans and taken to a nearby community hall.The police said that the condition of the eight fasting students was stable,and that they were being treated at the Royapettah General Hospital.
Students plan to take the struggle forward by forming a joint coordination committee. It will be purely a student movement with no political affiliation.
