Pakistan’s Supreme Court releasing a press release said that Chief Justice, Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry disassociating himself from a controversial letter written to President Mahinda Rajapaksa by the International Council of Jurists, supporting the process to impeach Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake.
Reference the press statement issued by International Council of Jurists that the recent impeachment of Chief Justice of Sri Lanka Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake is totally legal and absolutely in accordance with the prevalent Sri Lankan Laws (this statement is available on http://www.lankaweb.com/news/items/2013/02/02/icj-unreservedly-oks-impeachment/). The name of Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr. Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was also mentioned to support the press statement of International Council of Jurists.
It is clarified that no support has ever been extended by the Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr. Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to the decision of removing the Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake.
It is pertinent to mention here that International Council of Jurists represents top judges, chief justices of several countries and eminent persons in the field of law. Although the Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr. Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has been conferred the status of Vice President of the organization yet he has never ever supported such statement issued by International Council of Jurists.
