The Moratuwa University said it would relocate the National Diploma in Technology (NDT) programme to a new location in Diyagama, Homagama on a proposal by higher education minister S.B. Dissanayake. This action is being taken to prevent further violence between the two student groups.
On January 16 NDT students attacked students of the Moratuwa University Engineering Faculty with some students critically injured and university facilities severely damaged to the value of Rs.1 million and led to the disruption of studies at the Engineering Faculty.
“This is a project that has been in the pipeline for a long time. It is not something that we thought of overnight as a result of the recent clash,” Vice Chancellor Professor Jayawardene said.
He said the construction project would cost US$89 million but it was still uncertain when the construction work would be completed. The cabinet has given approval to obtain a loan through China for the purpose.
